Gbenga Daniel Fights for Apunren-Ijebu Community in Ogun State Land Dispute 😱*
Senator Gbenga Daniel has petitioned the Senate on behalf of the Apunren Development Association in Ijebu North East Local Government Area of Ogun State, alleging the Nigerian Army's unlawful acquisition of their ancestral land. The community, which has occupied the land for over 600 years, is seeking legislative intervention to restore their rights.
The dispute dates back to 1977 when the military acquired the land excessively. Although an agreement was reached to reduce the land allocation, a 1987 gazette reinstated the larger expanse, plunging the community into decades of uncertainty. The people of Apunren-Ijebu claim they've suffered demolitions, destruction of schools, hospitals, and houses, as well as loss of lives.
Senator Daniel assured residents that their voices have been heard and the Senate has directed the Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions to investigate the matter within three weeks. The Ogun State House of Assembly has also intervened, with Speaker Hon Oludaisi Elemide leading an on-the-spot assessment of the disputed areas.
The community is calling for justice, with AdeOluwa Adenaike, Secretary-General of Apunren-Ijebu, stating, "We welcomed you with tears, sir, but also with hope." The Alapunren of Apunren, Oba Jimoh Oyelaja, appealed to residents to remain calm, expressing confidence in Senator Daniel's commitment.
