EXTORTION ALLEGATIONS ROCK NIGERIA POLICE FORCE: A PATTERN OF ABUSE?

The Nigeria Police Force is facing renewed scrutiny over allegations of extortion and human rights abuses. Several incidents have come to light, highlighting a disturbing trend of police misconduct.

Recent Cases

- *N62 Million Extortion*: A businessman, Mr. Olu Agwu, was allegedly extorted of N62 million by the Enugu State Police Command's anti-kidnapping unit. The police accused Agwu of being affiliated with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Eastern Security Network (ESN), but Prof. Mike Ozekhome, SAN, has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, calling for an immediate investigation and the return of the extorted money.


- *N43 Million Extortion*: Four police officers attached to Zone 7 Headquarters in Abuja were found guilty of extorting N43,160,000 from a cargo worker at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. The officers, DSP Peter Ejike, Inspector Ekende Edwin, Inspector Esther Okafor, and Sergeant Talabi Kayode, were sanctioned and suspended.


- N151.5 Million Extortion: Four police inspectors were accused of abducting a Nigerian living abroad and extorting N151.5 million from his family.


The family claims that the officers demanded N1 billion for the victim's release, which was negotiated down to N151.5 million.

The Nigeria Police Force has taken steps to address these incidents, including investigations and disciplinary actions.
In the case of the N43 million extortion, the officers involved were suspended and would face prosecution upon completion of due legal and administrative procedures.

Concerns and Calls for Accountability
These incidents have raised concerns about police accountability and the need for reform within the force.
The allegations have sparked calls for immediate action, including the refund of extorted money, comprehensive investigations, and disciplinary measures against implicated officers.
