The Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) is a formidable civilian task force that has been making waves in combating crime in Nigeria, entering Ogun State with style.

Founded in 2013, the CJTF was established to support the Nigerian security forces in combating Boko Haram in the northeast and insurgency in Nigeria, with the primary goal of protecting local communities.¹

*Structure and Organization*

The CJTF is composed mainly of local volunteers who are familiar with the terrain and the communities they protect.

These volunteers work alongside the Nigerian military, police, DSS, and other security forces.

The organization is structured to include various units responsible for different operational tasks, such as intelligence gathering, surveillance, and community patrols.

*ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES*

The CJTF's primary functions include:

- *Intelligence Gathering*: Providing crucial intelligence on the movements and activities of insurgent groups, bandits, high-risk groups, and criminal gangs/activities.

- *COMMUNITY PROTECTION*: Conducting patrols and maintaining a presence in vulnerable communities to deter insurgent attacks and provide security for local populations.

- *SUPPORT TO MILITARY OPERATIONS*: Assisting the Nigerian military, police, and other security agencies in various operations, including raids and checkpoints.

- *HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE*: Providing humanitarian aid to displaced persons and affected communities, including distributing food and medical supplies.

*CHALLENGES AND CONTROVERSIES*

Despite its contributions to the fight against Boko Haram and restoring peace to communities, the CJTF faces several challenges, including financial problems, logistical difficulties, and occasional misunderstandings with the military/police over coordination and operational control.

*IMPACT AND ACHIEVEMENTS*

The CJTF has been instrumental in supporting military/police operations and providing security in areas affected by insurgency. Its local knowledge and commitment have helped in reducing the impact of Boko Haram's attacks, insurgency, banditry, and criminal gangs, and stabilizing affected communities.

With over 26,000 trained personnel and commands in 19 states in Nigeria, the CJTF is a force to be reckoned with in the fight against crime and insurgency in Nigeria.
