REVENGE!!!
"The problem with revenge is that it never evens the score. It ties both the injured and the injurer to an escalator of pain. Both are stuck on the escalator as long as parity is demanded, and the escalator never stops."
-Lewis B. Smedes.
Sometimes, I sit and regret the times I took my pound of flesh when I was wronged by fellow humans. Other times, I rue the days I failed to exact revenge and allowed disrespect slide.
Every now and then, I fight a constant battle over whether or not I should take revenge. On the one hand, I feel that it will give me peace and satisfaction. On the other hand, I look at the cost of taking revenge and just let it be.
Jeremy Taylor is famed for describing revenge as "a rolling stone, which, when a man hath forced up a hill, will return upon him with a greater violence, and break those bones whose sinews gave it motion." When you look at it this way, you see that revenge can be at more cost to you than the offender.
But Friedrich Nietzsche believes "it is impossible to suffer without making someone pay for it; every complaint already contains revenge." He is not very far from Stieg Larsson who says "to exact revenge for yourself or your friends is not only a right, it's an absolute duty."
As you can see, these opinions can be conflicting and confusing. You begin to wonder where to draw and erase the lines; you even wonder if the lines (should) exist in the first place.
I will leave you with these quotes after which I implore you to share with me your thoughts on this matter. To take revenge or not?
"Revenge and retaliation always perpetuate the cycle of anger, fear and violence."
-Coretta Scott King.
"It is up to God to take revenge. Only God can judge. I don't have to worry about getting even with anybody or taking out any kind of aggression on anybody. Doing that is a weakness, anyway."
-Jim Brown.
"Revenge is a sorrow for the person who has to take it on. And the person who is rash enough to think it's going to help a situation is always wrong."
-Louise Erdrich.
