President *Bola Ahmed Tinubu* has approved a sweeping restructuring and expansion of the *Nigerian Army*, increasing its operational formations to *12 Divisions* and authorizing the recruitment of *28,000 additional personnel*.
The reform is designed to enhance the Army’s capacity to respond to security challenges nationwide and improve command and control across all geopolitical zones.
*FULL LIST OF THE 12 ARMY DIVISIONS*
Under the new structure, each Division will have responsibility for specific states:
1. *1 Division – Kaduna*: Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Jigawa States
2. *2 Division – Ibadan*: Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, Ondo States
3. *3 Division – Jos*: Plateau, Bauchi, Gombe States
4. *5 Division – Makurdi*: Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi States
5. *6 Division – Port Harcourt*: Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River States
6. *7 Division – Maiduguri*: Borno, Yobe States
7. *8 Division – Sokoto*: Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara States
8. *9 Division – Ilorin*: Kwara, Niger States
9. *10 Division – Jalingo*: Taraba, Adamawa States
10. *81 Division – Lagos*: Lagos, Ogun States
11. *82 Division – Enugu*: Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi, Imo States
12. *83 Division – Benin City*: Edo, Delta, Bayelsa States
*IMPLEMENTATION TIMELINE*
The Army Headquarters says the implementation will run in *two phases*:
- *Phase 1 – To be completed by September 2026*:
Establishment of the new *5 Division, 9 Division, and 10 Division*, along with the reorganization of existing formations.
- *Phase 2 – To be completed by December 2026*:
Establishment of the new *83 Division* and further reorganization of commands.
The recruitment of *28,000 additional personnel* will run concurrently to adequately man the new and restructured formations.
Military analysts say the expansion reflects the administration’s commitment to *decentralize operations, reduce response time, and bring security closer to the people*.
