GTI Human Rights Activists Support Tough Measures Against Kidnapping, Cultism and Drug-Related Crimes.

-------------------

The increasing rate of insecurity in Nigeria, particularly kidnapping, cultism, and other violent crimes, has become a major concern to citizens and stakeholders across the country. Many observers believe that the absence of stringent penalties has emboldened criminals, making kidnapping a lucrative enterprise in some parts of the nation.

Recent incidents, including cases where individuals allegedly staged their own kidnappings for financial gain, demonstrate how deeply rooted and profitable the criminal enterprise has become. There are also growing concerns about the recruitment and training of kidnappers in forested areas across the country, further worsening the security situation.

In response to these developments, Comrade Bibi Oduku, Chairman of Guard Time Information (GTI) Human Rights Activists Nationwide, alongside members of the organization, including legal practitioners and civil society advocates, has expressed strong support for the efforts of Monday Okpebholo, Governor of Edo State, to strengthen legal measures against kidnapping, cultism, and related crimes.

According to Comrade Oduku, criminals have taken advantage of weak enforcement mechanisms and societal tolerance to transform kidnapping into a thriving criminal venture. He disclosed that GTI's legal team in Edo State is preparing a proposal aimed at providing legal and advocacy support to the state government in its fight against insecurity. The initiative will involve collaboration with concerned citizens, journalists, and civil society groups committed to promoting peace and security.

He also condemned the spread of false alarms and misinformation regarding security incidents, noting that such actions unnecessarily create fear among residents and undermine public confidence. He urged citizens to support the Edo State Government and security agencies in combating kidnapping, cultism, drug abuse, and other crimes threatening national stability.

Speaking on behalf of the organization's institutional development arm, Professor Adegbenga Onabamiro highlighted the devastating impact of insecurity on educational institutions. He noted that many academics, students, and educational administrators have suffered greatly from the activities of kidnappers in recent years.

Professor Onabamiro called on the Federal Government, state governments, communities, and individuals to unite in confronting insecurity. He advocated for the establishment of intelligence-driven security networks linking educational institutions with host communities, the Nigeria Police Force, and the military to ensure rapid emergency response and enhanced protection of lives and property.

He further observed that persistent insecurity has limited the ability of educational institutions to operate freely, thereby affecting the quality of teaching, learning, research, and overall academic development in Nigeria.

Also speaking, Barrister Confidence. O. Agbator cautioned against the growing trend of individuals faking kidnapping incidents for personal gain. She urged parents and community leaders to report any individual involved in criminal activities rather than shielding them from law enforcement agencies.

Barrister Confidence. O. Agbator who is the Head of Legal affairs of Guard Time Information in the Edo State Civil matters warned that communities that tolerate criminality ultimately endanger their own future peace and security. She encouraged citizens to remain vigilant, noting that informants and collaborators of criminal gangs often operate within communities while gathering intelligence on potential victims.

In his concluding remarks, Comrade Bibi Oduku urged Governor Monday Okpebholo to remain resolute in implementing policies and laws aimed at curbing kidnapping, cultism, drug trafficking, and other criminal activities. He emphasized that decisive action is essential for safeguarding lives, restoring public confidence, and promoting sustainable peace and development in Edo State and Nigeria as a whole.
