The Ogun State Police Command has arrested 30-year-old private school teacher Nathaniel Baiyegun for the alleged murder of Florence, a 16-year-old West African Senior School Certificate Examination candidate and his former student. bbd1

According to police sources, Baiyegun lured the teenager to an uncompleted building under the pretense of an academic coaching session.

Once there, he allegedly held her captive, administered an overdose of sleeping tablets, and later dumped her body in a river in Ogijo after assuming she was dead.

Police say the murder was linked to a ransom scheme. After killing Florence, Baiyegun allegedly demanded ₦500,000 from her father and later confessed to spending the money on online sports betting.

Investigators also revealed a history of exploitation.

The suspect had reconnected with Florence about a year after she left his former school and attempted to force her into a relationship with a friend.

Preliminary findings suggest he was involved in internet fraud and had previously requested nude photographs from the victim.

In a confessional statement, Baiyegun claimed he was close to Florence but denied any romantic involvement, stating he taught only science students while she was in the humanities.

The case is a stark example of how the authority and trust placed in educators can be abused.

Teachers are expected to safeguard students, not exploit their vulnerability for financial gain or personal motives.

Baiyegun remains in police custody as investigations continue. If the allegations are substantiated, the case will test the state’s resolve to prosecute crimes against minors swiftly and without leniency, regardless of the perpetrator’s profession.
