*“Commands Must Take Full Responsibility” – Zone 2 Police Chief Reorganizes Oversight, Commends Sanwo-Olu’s Support*
Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Olohundare Moshood Jimoh, has ordered an immediate stop to the routine transfer of cases from the Lagos and Ogun State Police Commands to Zone 2 Headquarters, Onikan, insisting that Commissioners of Police must now take full responsibility for investigations within their jurisdictions.
The directive was issued during his maiden strategic security meeting with CPs from both states, convened to boost operational efficiency, speed up justice delivery, and reinforce accountability.
*Key Directives from AIG Jimoh*
1. *End to Blanket Case Transfers*: All criminal investigations must be handled and concluded within the respective state commands. This is aimed at ensuring faster resolution, better supervision, and eliminating unnecessary delays caused by file movements.
2. *Controlled Oversight*: Petitions alleging lapses or grievances will be referred back to the affected state command for the Commissioner of Police to address and report findings directly to the AIG.
3. *Specialized Support Only*: Zone 2 Headquarters will now intervene only in cases requiring specialized technical expertise or inter-state coordination, not as a default escalation point.
4. *Crime Crackdown Ordered*: Both commands were directed to intensify proactive policing against violent crimes, with emphasis on intelligence-led operations and community engagement.
*Security Assessment & Strategy*
AIG Jimoh noted that the security situation in Lagos and Ogun remains largely stable, with “significant successes in crime prevention and control” already recorded. He credited ongoing “people-centred policing strategies” for the progress, urging both commands to scale up efforts to sustain public confidence.
*Warning to Officers*
The Zone 2 boss issued a stern warning on discipline: “Any officer found violating operational guidelines or engaging in unprofessional conduct will face disciplinary action.” He stressed that professionalism, respect for human rights, and adherence to standard operating procedure are non-negotiable.
*Commendation for Lagos State Government*
Jimoh praised Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for consistent logistical support to the Police through the Lagos State Security Trust Fund, including patrol vehicles, equipment, and training. “These contributions have strengthened policing operations and improved safety,” he stated, while also acknowledging similar support from the Ogun State Government.
*Assurance to Residents*
Reaffirming the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force, AIG Jimoh assured residents of Lagos and Ogun: “We will sustain all necessary measures to ensure the safety of lives and property.”
*Implication*: The new policy shifts greater investigative burden and accountability to state CPs, reduces bureaucratic bottlenecks, and signals a push for faster case disposal and improved public trust in policing across Zone 2.
