OGUN STATE TAKES PROACTIVE STANCE AGAINST INSECURITY: DOCUMENTATION OF FOREIGN WORKERS AND MONITORING OF SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITIES TO ENSURE PUBLIC SAFETY*
Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has announced a series of measures to enhance security in the state, citing recent spikes in banditry, terrorism, and other heinous crimes across the country.
Addressing journalists in Iperu, Abiodun disclosed that the state government will embark on the documentation of all undocumented foreign nationals working with multinational companies operating in the state.
The governor also revealed that new non-indigenes entering the state will undergo thorough screening by their community leaders to verify their purpose and means of livelihood, aiming to prevent the orchestration of violence.
This move is part of the government's proactive steps to safeguard lives and property across the state.
Abiodun highlighted the recent arrest of approximately 70 foreigners, mostly from Niger Republic, Sudan, and Chad, who failed to provide clear explanations for their presence in the state.
He directed law enforcement agencies to process these individuals through the Nigeria Immigration Service.
The governor expressed concern over the activities of scavengers, noting that they now pose a significant security threat.
He emphasized that law enforcement agencies will monitor them closely to prevent their involvement in criminal activities.
The governor also directed the police to clear out areas such as "Zanga" in Ijebu-Ode and similar enclaves across the state, warning that properties used by criminals would be seized by the government.
Abiodun addressed the issue of illegal mining, stating that the government is working with security agencies to flush out criminals from mining sites and forest reserves.
He appealed to residents to support community policing efforts by providing credible information to security agencies, emphasizing that security is a collective responsibility.
The governor commended security agencies for their cooperation and synergy, which has contributed to the peace currently enjoyed by Ogun State.
He lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for stabilizing the economy and rescuing kidnapped victims in Niger and Kwara states.
Abiodun warned traditional rulers against allocating government land to strangers, cautioning that any ruler found culpable would be held accountable for undermining the state's interest.
The government will provide necessary logistics to security agencies to enhance their operations, he added.
