*TINUBU SIGNS LAW ESTABLISHING 48 POLICE TRAINING INSTITUTIONS ACROSS NIGERIA*
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed the Nigeria Police Training Institutions Establishment Bill, 2024, into law, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria's policing history. This landmark legislation grants statutory recognition to 48 police training institutions across the country, aiming to professionalize police education and align Nigeria's law enforcement standards with global best practices.
The new law categorizes police training institutions into five tiers:
- *Police Colleges*: Institutions like those in Ikeja (Lagos), Kaduna (Kaduna), Maiduguri (Borno), and Oji River (Enugu)
- *Police Training Schools*: Located in Bauchi, Minna, Sokoto, Benin, and other strategic locations
- *Police Tactical Schools*: Elite operational training centers, including Mobile Training Schools in Gwoza (Borno), Ila-Orangun (Osun), and Ende-Hill (Nasarawa)
- *Police Technical Training Schools*: Covering institutions like the Police Public Relations School in Lafia (Nasarawa) and its Abuja campus
- *Specialized Police Institutions*: Such as the Police Institute of Digital Studies and Cyber Security in Abeokuta (Ogun) and the Police School of Nursing and Midwifery in Ezimo (Enugu)
This development is expected to enhance research in security management, promote continuous professional development, and strengthen Nigeria's internal security architecture. Security analysts have hailed this move as one of the most comprehensive legislative reforms in Nigeria's policing history.
