THE UNYIELDING QUEST FOR IJEBU STATE: A LEGACY OF DIGNITY AND SELF-DETERMINATION*
For over four decades, the Ijebu people have been advocating for their rightful place among Nigerian states. The 1982 memorandum, "Movement for the Creation of Ijebu State," sparked a movement that refuses to die. This powerful document, presented to the National Assembly, outlined the Ijebu people's historical, cultural, and economic justification for statehood.
The memorandum highlighted Ijebu's rich history, unified culture, and economic prowess, with over 117 industries, commercial hubs, and a population exceeding 1.2 million. The people's vision for self-determination and dignity has only grown stronger, inspiring generations to fight for their rights.
Today, the Ijebu Lokan Fun ITESIWAJU IJEBU Movement carries the torch, seeking justice, recognition, and completion of the 1982 dream. With six viable local governments and a proven record of enterprise, education, and unity, Ijebu State's creation is not just a demand, but justice long delayed.
The Ijebu people's quest is about dignity, self-determination, and legacy. Their spirit remains unbroken, and their dream alive. It's time for Nigeria to recognize Ijebu State's rightful place among its states.
