OGUN STATE GOVERNMENT CURBS EXTRAVAGANT GRADUATION PARTIES Focuses on Key Milestones

The Ogun State Government in Nigeria has taken a significant step to curb excessive spending on graduation ceremonies in schools.
According to Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, graduation celebrations will now be limited to pupils completing Primary Six, Junior Secondary School Three (JSS3), and Senior Secondary School Three (SS3).

Key Aspects of the Policy

- *Allowed Celebrations*: Only Primary 6, JSS3, and SS3 graduations will be permitted, aiming to reduce financial burdens on parents and promote moderation.

- *Rationale*: The government seeks to shift focus from lavish parties to academic achievements, addressing concerns that elaborate celebrations divert attention from education's core essence.

- *Textbook Policy*: Schools must adhere to a six-year cycle before changing textbooks, easing financial strain on parents and emphasizing effective teaching over frequent book changes.

Government's Objectives:
Prof. Arigbabu stressed that quality education hinges on effective teaching and resource utilization, not frequent textbook updates.
Schools imposing unnecessary changes will face sanctions, with the ministry monitoring compliance closely.
This policy aligns with Ogun State's broader educational reforms aiming for affordability and impact.¹

The move is expected to ease financial pressures on parents while promoting a focus on academic milestones.
Other states like Edo, Imo, Ondo, Benue, and Ebonyi have implemented similar policies.
