OGUN ISSUES FLOOD WARNING: RELOCATE NOW, GOVT URGES VULNERABLE AREAS"*
The Ogun State Government has raised a midterm flood alert, warning residents in flood-prone communities to prepare for possible flooding between September and November 2025.
This alert follows predictions from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) indicating heavy rainfall in the region.¹ ² ³
Critical Periods and Rainfall Forecasts:
*September-October*: Identified as critical months with expected heavy rainfall - 204mm in September and 190mm in October.
- *November*: Rainfall expected to subside to 93mm.
Flood-Prone Areas:
- *Coastal and Riverine Communities*: Iwopin, Ifaara, Oni, Makun, Ebute-Imobi, Tungeji Island.
- *Settlements along Ogun River*: Isheri, Warewa, Akute, Abeokuta.
- *Communities along ILO and Iju Rivers*: Also at risk.
Government Preparations and Advisories:
- *State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA)*: On red alert for evacuation operations.
- *Ministry of Environment*: Collaborating with Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority to regulate dam releases.
- *Residents Advised*: To relocate to safer areas, harvest fish stocks immediately (especially in Eriwe, Yemule, Ilese, Ayegbami), and avoid using wells/boreholes due to contamination risks.
Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Ola Oresanya, reassured residents of the government's commitment to protecting lives and property, appealing for cooperation to address the challenge jointly.
