BEYOND INDIVIDUAL: NUJ OGUN-EAST INDEPENDENT CHAPEL CALLS FOR UNITY AGAINST UNETHICAL PRACTICES
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun-East Independent Chapel, is calling on all journalists in the Ogun-East Senatorial District to stand united in upholding ethical standards, fostering solidarity, and protecting the integrity of the profession.
Journalism is more than a profession, it is a sacred trust. It is the pillar of democracy, the watchdog of society, and the voice of the voiceless.
In recent times, our noble profession has faced serious challenges, particularly in Ogun-East senatorial district of the state, where fake news, unethical practices, and reckless reporting threaten public trust and undermine the reputation of dedicated journalists, especially through social media platforms.
Fake news is not a harmless act. It distorts public perception, erodes trust, and threatens societal stability. Similarly, unethical practices; whether through plagiarism, bribery, bias, or disregard for professional codes, damage the credibility of journalism and betray the trust of the people we serve.
As journalists operating in Ogun-East, you hold immense power to shape opinion and influence progress. This responsibility must always be exercised with fairness, integrity, and respect for truth.
With this sense of urgency, NUJ Ogun-East Independent Chapel, under the leadership of Comrade Oluseun Oduneye, calls on all practicing journalists in the district to unite under the banner of professionalism, discipline, and ethical standards.
The Chapel is more than an association, it is a collective dedicated to safeguarding the dignity of journalism in our region. Membership provides not only a platform for continuous professional development but also a strong voice to advocate for the welfare, rights, and protection of journalists.
In today’s fast-paced information environment, misinformation can spread like wildfire, causing confusion, fear, and division. Every journalist has a duty to resist the temptation of publishing unverified stories for the sake of “breaking news” or pursuing personal or political interests.
The fight against fake news and unethical journalism cannot be won in isolation. It requires a united front. NUJ Ogun-East Independent Chapel is committed to providing training, resources, and support to ensure journalists maintain the highest professional standards.
By joining, you commit to: * Promoting accurate, balanced, and fair reporting. * Rejecting and exposing fake news and misinformation. * Upholding ethical codes and editorial independence. * Strengthening solidarity among colleagues. * Advocating for the safety, welfare, and rights of journalists.
We urge all journalists in the region, whether in print, broadcast, digital media, or freelance practice to become part of this collective effort. Your membership is not just a badge, it is a declaration that you stand for truth, ethics, and professionalism. The future of journalism in Ogun-East depends on our collective resolve. Together, let us build a profession that earns respect, nurtures trust, and serves the people with honour.
