COMMANDER'S ENGAGEMENT AS GUEST SPEAKER AT THE CONSOLIDATED CHAPEL, NIGERIAN UNION OF JOURNALISTS (NUJ), OGUN STATE CHAPTER*
Yesterday, 11th August 2025, the State Commander NDLEA, Ogun State Command, CN Tijjani Rabe, presented a paper title "Drug abuse; implications among youths in the 21st century", in commemoration of 2025 International Youth Day organized by the Consolidated Chapel, Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Chapter.
2. The State Commander underscored the severe and far-reaching consequences of drug abuse among Nigerian youths, describing it as a pressing national concern. He emphasized that the growing prevalence of this menace erodes societal values, undermines the nation’s human capital, and jeopardizes the prospects for sustainable development.
Commander Rabe highlighted contributing factors such as;peer pressure, academic and career pressure, digital exposure, and mental health disorders etc. Citing the 2018 National Drug Use Survey, that puts drug use prevalence in Nigeria stands at 14.4% nearly three times the global average of 5.6% with 14.3 million Nigerians aged between 15 and 64 who admitted using illicit drugs in the last 6months of that reseach.He also said that south-West has the highest rate of drug abuse in the country, with over 4 million people indulging in various substances. He noted that most users begin experimentation between ages 17 and 19, a period he called “the prime of youth.”
Commander Rabe further outlined the agency’s core approaches for combating drug abuse and trafficking: supply reduction through arrests, seizures, and prosecution of drug offenders; and demand reduction through education, community engagement, and rehabilitation programmes. He further disclosed that in 2024, NDLEA Ogun State Command seized 12 tonnes of cannabis, arrested 687 suspects, counselled 406 drug users, and secured 221 convictions. Between January and June 2025, the Command arrested 395 suspects, counselled 186 clients, and seized eight tonnes of cannabis and other psychotropic substances, resulting in 97 convictions.
In conclusion, Commander Rabe called on parents, religious leaders, traditional rulers, educational institutions, and communities to unite in a concerted effort to address the scourge of drug abuse.
